Gillingham School Library

The school library is located just along from the IT corridor and is open from 8.30 am.

It is well stocked with an extensive range of fiction and non-fiction resources, including DVDs to reflect all age groups and areas of the curriculum.  There is a suite of 18 computers that students can use during break and lunch and table space that can be used for study.

The library is staffed throughout the day by a professional librarian and one of two experienced library assistants.

Students can purchase all items of required stationery in the school shop and buy tickets for any performances staged by the school.

Reading Trails

Any student can sign up to do a Reading Trail in which the librarian helps them select 8 books to read.  Each book is chosen to extend and broaden their reading choices, introducing them to a whole range of authors and books that they may not have discovered.  When they finish reading all of the books, they have a conversation with the librarian about them and are then awarded a £10 Amazon voucher.

Student Library Assistants

Students have the opportunity to become library assistants.  They complete an application form, have an interview and then if successful they have a weekly duty time in which they follow a training programme and earn awards.  They make a magnificent contribution to the running of the library.

Student Library Committee

Students can join the student library committee who meet once a week during registration time and work on their own library related projects.  This year they have created book advent calendars for each Year 7 tutor group, organised an Egyptian Mummy Book Hunt, Easter Egg Hunt and for World Book Day they had a Cake Sale and a Book Sale.

Reading Club

Students can become members of the after-school Reading Club, which meets every Wednesday until 4.20.  We do all sorts of activities designed to share and extend our enjoyment of reading.

Creative Writing Club

The library has been running a small weekly Creative Writing Club for those students who are keen writers.  We share writing ideas, look at aspects such as plot, characterisation, atmosphere to see how we can improve our writing and we read each other’s work to give constructive criticism.

Homework Club

From Monday to Thursday, the library runs an after-school Homework Club.  Students can use the resources and space to complete their homework with the help of Sixth Form students.
