This is a prestigious award which is respected by colleges, universities and employers, in recognition of the wide range of skills that it develops in young people.
Gillingham School is proud to be a DofE licence holder. We offer the scheme to all students from Year 9 and are delighted that so many of our young people participate in this national scheme.
At each level, students will undertake a series of challenges over a specified time frame, depending on the award level.
Physical This can be any sport, dance or fitness activity appropriate to your ability level
Skill An activity that will allow you to broaden your understanding and increase your expertise in your chosen skill
Volunteering This is about giving time to do something meaningful, motivated by making a difference. This can be working within your community, social enterprises, charities or within school or other organisations. It can be in person or on-line
Expedition This is about planning, training for and completing a self-reliant expedition in a team. This will be organised through school, and there is also the option to complete this with a DofE open award centre. The expedition must be completed by your own physical efforts – either on foot or other options such as kayaking, horse riding or cycling – there are lots of choices.
Gold Only
Residential This is a shared activity or course over five days with people you don’t know, in a residential setting away from home. It is about being part of a team and getting to know new people. It can be undertaken in this country or abroad, with a whole array of exciting opportunities.
On completion of each Award you will receive a certificate and attend our awards evening. The completion of the Gold Award will result in an invitation to Buckingham Palace for a celebration event, hosted by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh.
