Years 10 & 11

These are two separate and exciting courses that develop and test students’ skills in reading and writing and introduce them to a range of classic and modern literature. All assessment comes at the end of Year 11, though students’ work will be continually assessed and there will be internal examinations at key points during the course.

GCSE English Language

Component Assessment
Component 1: 20th Century Literature Reading and Creative Prose Writing
Section A (20%) – Reading

Understanding of a short extract of a piece of literary writing from the 20th century assessed through a range of structured questions
Section B (20%) – Prose Writing
One creative writing task selected from a choice of four titles
Written examination: 1 hour 45 minutes
40% of qualification
Component 2: 19th and 21st Century Non-Fiction Reading and Functional Writing
Compulsory transactional/persuasive writing tasks

Component 3: Spoken Language
This is a compulsory element but does not count towards the overall grade
One presentation/speech, including responses to questions and feedback
Written examination: 2 hours 60% of qualification

Section A – (20%) Post-1914 prose/drama
One source-based question on a post 1914 prose/drama text
Section B – (20%) 19th century prose
One source-based question on a 19th century prose text
Section C (20%) Unseen poetry from the 20th/21st century
Two questions on unseen poems, one of which involves comparison
Written examination: 2 hours and 30 minutes
60% of qualification
